Stainless Steel Vessel Weld Exposure & Protective Coating
Scope of Works
Perfect Remediation was engaged by Gordon Brothers Industries to deliver surface remediation services on a stainless steel vessel at Unilever’s Minto plant. The primary objective was to prepare the vessel for third-party weld repairs and ensure protective recoating post-works. The completed scope included:
- Site establishment and supervision for safe access to the vessel
- Grinding and wire brushing of welded seams to expose the full length of each weld line, plus 50mm to either side for inspection and rework
- Coordination with other trades to allow welders access post-surface prep
- Final surface cleaning and preparation prior to coating
- Application of protective coating system, using two coats of Dulux Zincanode 304 or equivalent zinc-rich epoxy primer.
Challenges
- The vessel had multiple welds of different orientations and profiles, requiring precise manual preparation to avoid damage to surrounding surfaces
- Works had to be sequenced around other specialist trades, especially welding contractors, requiring tight coordination and scheduling
- The vessel had previously been insulated, and care had to be taken not to damage any remaining fixtures or cladding support
- There were access limitations, with reliance on client-supplied scaffold and equipment.
How PRR Overcame the Challenges
Perfect Remediation completed the project effectively by applying proven methods and clear communication:
- Used a combination of grinders, flap wheels, and wire brushes to expose the weld seams with minimal impact to surrounding metal
- Delivered the surface preparation in a single mobilisation, enabling weld contractors to begin work without delay
- Maintained continuous communication with Gordon Brothers and the site team to align on sequencing and minimise downtime
- Applied the zinc-rich epoxy coating uniformly post-welding, restoring long-term corrosion protection to the exposed areas.
