Location

Herbert Street, St Leonards NSW

Client

Forum Properties

Duration

3 months

Perfect Remediation was engaged to deliver the complete remediation and refurbishment of the pedestrian bridge screens along Herbert Street in St Leonards, NSW.

The existing bridge structure had ageing perforated metal screens and exposed steel elements that required removal, remediation and replacement to restore safety, durability and visual presentation.

Due to the bridge’s location in a busy urban area, the project required carefully staged works, strict traffic management and authority approvals, while ensuring minimal disruption to motorists and pedestrians.

Scope of Works

Perfect Remediation delivered a full remediation program to extend the life of the bridge and improve the overall safety and appearance of the asset.

Key works included:

  • Removal of deteriorated perforated bridge screens

  • Off-site blasting, refurbishment and powder coating of structural steel frames and screens

  • Structural steel remediation and repairs

  • Reinstallation of refurbished screens

  • Traffic management planning and implementation

  • Lane closures and pedestrian detours

  • Crane and EWP operations under approved Road Occupancy Permits (ROP/ROL)

Challenges

The project presented several logistical and operational challenges due to the bridge’s location over a busy road corridor.

Key challenges included:

  • Maintaining full safety separation from live traffic during elevated works

  • Implementing a complete pedestrian detour during bridge shutdown periods

  • Coordinating off-site remediation works with strict reopening deadlines

  • Managing multiple authority approvals including Road Occupancy Permits and police closures

Our Approach

Perfect Remediation implemented a structured three-stage delivery strategy to ensure efficient and safe project completion.

Stage 1 – Night Works
  • Full road possession with approved traffic control

  • Installation of edge protection and safety hoardings

  • Removal of corroded bridge screens and transport off-site for refurbishment

Stage 2 – Bridge Closure Period
  • Full pedestrian detour implemented

  • Off-site blasting and powder coating of screens

  • Structural steel spot repairs on the bridge

Stage 3 – Final Night Works
  • Full road possession and installation of refurbished screens

  • Reinstallation using EWPs and crane access

  • Quality checks and final site clean prior to reopening traffic

Project Outcome

Perfect Remediation successfully delivered the refurbishment works on schedule and in full compliance with authority requirements.

The project resulted in:

  • Improved structural durability and corrosion protection

  • Enhanced public safety and bridge aesthetics

  • Minimal disruption to surrounding traffic and pedestrian movement

Through careful planning and staged construction, the bridge was reopened on time with upgraded screens and remediated structural steel designed for long-term performance.
